We celebrated the end of the bank holiday weekend by having dinner with a couple of friends on Monday evening. We saw a good deal going online for The Dining Room at the Goring Hotel, so we jumped at the opportunity to try dinner at this established British restaurant. After all, how often do you get to dine at the hotel used by Kate Middleton for her pre-wedding preparation or eat at the restaurant frequented by the Queen Mother? Being just a short ride from Buckingham Palace, the Goring Hotel, a luxury hotel owned and run by the founding Goring family, that’s been established for over a 100 years, seems to be the local haunt of the Royal Family.
After a quick aperitif in the lounge overlooking the garden, we were ushered into The Dining Room, a stunning room complete with Swarovski chandeliers and elegant furnishings. Being a Monday night, there were only about 3 or 4 other diners present which meant a quiet atmosphere with super attentive waiters – perfect for catching up with friends!
Before we tucked into our set menu dishes, the chef complemented us with little shot glasses of Eggs Drumbiko, which the waiters introduced as the late Queen Mother’s favourite dish. What can I say – the Queen Mother had great taste because this concoction of lobster, tomatoes, chopped egg and mayo, topped with sherry flavoured jelly, turned out to be a superb combination (who would’ve thought, looking at the list of ingredients!).
I proceeded to start with smoked herrings on a crab and apple salad with tarragon dressing, followed by a roast fillet of John Dory, accompanied with River Kennet crayfish, garlic mash and shellfish broth. Unfortunately, I haven’t got photos of either dish as I was too caught up in trying to get my fork into them pronto. They didn’t disappoint.
What I did manage a photo of was the strawberry meringue I had for dessert. The small bite sized portions of strawberries and two cute pieces of meringue were just the right amount of sweet and not too heavy after 3 courses.
We ended dinner by finishing off our bottles of wine (yes, they served us two bottles, instead of the two glasses we were expecting), alongside some complementary petits fours.
We left the hotel feeling sufficiently full and extremely content with the amazing food and top notch service. If you’re interested, there’s currently an offer going on that is just too good to miss!
