I arrived in Cairns at 6.30am on an overnight bus. With 4 hours to kill I walked around the city centre to try to find something open at this time and chanced upon the Cairns Esplanade. As someone who is into sports and outdoor activities, I was super excited to see a free lagoon, beach and a beautiful pathway to run through.
And so, for the first time since my trip started, I laced up my running trainers and went for a half jog, half walk around the Esplanade.
I headed right first, to catch some views of the marina.
Doubling back on myself, I passed by the pool area again and continued running along the path by the beach. Being low-tide, the beach wasn’t much to look at early in the morning.
However, the more I saw, the more I liked the Esplanade. There were outdoor beach volleyball courts, bouldering walls, tennis courts, outdoor gym sets, childrens’ playground and a bunch of other activities.
I continued running past the Esplanade route, fuelled by this beautiful sight.
The running path itself was also pretty, and very very quiet with no one about at this early hour.
I would have continued exploring but my 2 hours of locker time was nearly up so I made my way back via the cycle paths, something I can only dream about in London.
I’m not sure what else there is to see in Cairns (if you’re not into partying), but I think I’ve seen the best of it. 🙂
Have you been to Cairns? Any suggestions on what I should do if I have a day there?
