To be honest, I didn’t know the transport was so expensive! It’s crazy and I would definitely expect the food and accommodation to be more expensive. We also couldn’t quite find an easy to use app to track our travel spend so we are taking a small notebook when backpacking the Philippines and Indonesia.

Mmm, I guess I had more choices and options with my food and accommodation. With travel, I had to go with what was available and I was also moving around a fair bit as I wanted to see everything! There are cheaper bus companies in NZ you can go with, but Intercity have a rep for reliability so I decided to just go with them.

Trail Wallet. I swear by it. It’s like $2 and so, so worth it. Forget the notebook, track your spending on your phone. (more at http://nzmuse.com/2013/09/how-to-manage-money-on-the-road-while-travelling/)

You have a lot more ground to cover in Aus so I’m not surprised!

With hostels I was never really fussed about huge dorms – figured if we had to share with others, 4 others vs 8 others didn’t make enough of a difference to care about.

Ha, you’re a lot more tolerant than me!
